5 Sunscreens Reviewed + What I Look For In A Sunscreen

sunscreen reviews

Growing up, I hated the sunscreen my Mom put on me. The one that smells like sunscreen, hard to massage in, dries on leaving a whitish tint and feels sticky. It’s been a challenge finding a good sunscreen that is fragrance-free, has an SPF of 50+, lightweight, moisturizing, fast absorbing and something with little to no toxic ingredients in it.

Last year, I went to a baseball game and by the end of the game, I looked like a lobster. I have horrors from that day, so I decided to do some research and find a good sunscreen that actually works and that I can use on a daily basis. I started my product research on Amazon by reading customer reviews. One review I read mentioned EWG. I didn’t know what that was so I did a Google search. EWG (Environmental Working Group) is a website that rates products based on how many toxic-chemicals they may have. From those two websites, I was able to make some purchasing decisions. I have since tried the products and wanted to share my reviews with you guys in lieu of the summertime season approaching us.

**Side Note: Amazon is an excellent place to start with product research. Simply search a product and read the customer reviews. Starting my research on Amazon helped me with this post.

Below are a few sunscreens I tested to help you make a purchasing decision and this is my 100% honest review in case you were thinking about buying one of these sunscreens.

SunBum Face 50:

I applied this face sunscreen a couple weeks ago when I went to a baseball game. I applied it on my face, arms, back, and legs and I am happy to say this really worked! I was in the hot sun from 11am – 8pm and I had no issues with sunburn. I also did not reapply this either. I really liked how it absorbed into the skin quickly, was not at all greasy and fragrance-free. I only wish it came in a bigger bottle!

Benefits:

  • Fragrance-Free
  • SPF 50
  • UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum
  • Water Resistant (80 Minutes)
  • Break-Out Free
  • Vegan
  • Free of Parabens, Phthalates, Oxybenzone, Retinyl Palmitate Free

EWG Rating: 4

Eau Thermale Avene Ultra-Light Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion:

I applied this sunscreen lotion a few times on my face last year. Although it says Fragrance-Free, I found it did have a sunscreen scent to it, however, it’s a very light fragrance. You have to shake this product really well before applying as it’s a bit runny. I really liked how it absorbed quickly into my skin. It went on clear, no white residue but you really do need to re-apply this. Although it says Water Resistant (80 Minutes) you still need to reapply every few hours or else you could burn.

Benefits:

  • SPF 50
  • UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum
  • Water Resistant (80 Minutes)
  • Oil-Free
  • Paraben-Free
  • Ultra-Light Hydrating
  • Fast absorbing
  • Matte Finish

EWG Rating: 6

Juice Beauty SPF 30 Mineral Moisturizer Sheer:

This mineral sunscreen smells like sunblock and a little goes a long way. You’ll really need to massage this one into your skin but once you do it will be clear. What’s nice about this is it’s an all organic sunscreen and blends zinc broad-spectrum with ingredients of apple, grape and aloe juices. This isn’t a bad sunscreen for laying around at the beach but for an everyday sunscreen for face, I am not loving the smell or the way it makes my skin feel.

Benefits:

  • Organic
  • Free of parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances
  • Vegan

ThinkSport Sunscreen SPF 50+:

I was surprised at how quickly this sport sunscreen absorbed into my skin. I know on the tube it says sunscreen for kids, however, don’t be fooled – this is a great sunscreen for adults too with added protection! It does not at all leave a white residue. It smells like citrus but in a very light and refreshing way. It’s also top rated on EWG’s list since 2010 and the first mineral sunscreen to pass Whole Foods Premium Body Care requirements.

Benefits:

  • SPF 50+
  • Dermatologist Recommended
  • UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum
  • Water Resistant (80 Minutes)
  • Dermatologist Recommended
  • Vegan
  • Free of PABA, Parabens, Phthalates, Oxybenzone, BPA, Avobenzone, petroleum, and dioxane or toxic chemicals
  • Vegan

EWG Rating: 1

SunBum 50 Premium Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion:

I did read the reviews on SunBum’s moisturizing sunscreen lotion and everyone seemed to like it other than the smell. I bought it anyway just to check it out because overall it had positive reviews. I have to be honest and say I really dislike the smell. It smells like tropical fruits and coconut which doesn’t make a very good everyday sunscreen in my opinion. This stuff is nothing like the SunBum Face 50. It is creamy, absorbs quickly into the skin and very moisturizing which I love but I hate the smell which is a shame.

Benefits:

  • SPF 50
  • UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum
  • Water Resistant (80 Minutes)
  • Enriched with Vitamin E Antioxidants
  • Break-Out Free
  • Vegan
  • Free of PABA, Oil, Parabens, Oxybenzone, Retinyl Palmitate Free

EWG Rating: 5

Out of all of these sunscreens, I have to say my favorite is SunBum Face 50. This is one of the best sunscreens for everyday use. SunBum actually works and doesn’t at all feel like a sunscreen. I can use this every day and not worry about getting sunburnt. There’s no fragrance, it’s creamy, absorbs quickly, has UV protection and has all the benefits I am looking for. I just wish it came in a bigger bottle and was a little less non-toxic on EWG’s website. My second pick would have to be ThinkSport Sunscreen SPF 50+ because it’s so impressive that it was rated a 1 on EWG’s site and is a non-toxic sunscreen. This would be an excellent product for infants and little ones. I just wish it was a little more lightweight and moisturizing.

If you have a sunscreen in mind that is what I am looking for, please send to me either in the comments below or via email. I would love to try it!
